Researching your family history can be a fascinating, if sometimes unsettling, experience. We love to discover where we’ve come from, hence the success of the TV series ‘Who do you think you are?’. In a recent episode Jodie Whitaker was rather embarrassed to discover that her Yorkshire forebears had been mine owners who kept their pits open during the general strikes of 1921 and 1926, making a tidy profit in the process. In my own case I was shocked to discover that my grandfather’s life had come to an untimely end at his own hands – making the front page of the News of the World in 1922.
So much for where we’ve come from, what about where we’re going? Who do you think you’re going to be? What if we could unearth the future in the same way that we discover the past? Well the Bible says we can. John’s Gospel promises that those who believe in Jesus and welcome him into their lives will become children of God and live forever. It’s like Danny Dyer in reverse – on a previous episode of ‘Who do you think you are?’ he discovered he had come from a royal bloodline, by faith in Jesus we can join one!
