While she may not have scored many points, the British entry to the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest will be forever remembered as the singer who was interrupted half way through her song. SuRie was giving it her all and thoroughly enjoying the night when a protester ran on to the stage and grabbed the microphone from her hand before being swiftly apprehended by security guards. With consummate professionalism SuRie picked up the mic and carried on as if nothing had happened.
Of course she’s not the first celebrity to be interrupted mid-way through a party. The Old Testament records the story of a King, Belshazzar, who was throwing a party to celebrate his own greatness, when God interrupted the fun and started writing on the wall. Belshazzar’s error was to put himself above God and God stepped in to remind him that some humility wouldn’t go amiss.
While we may not throw parties to boast about our own greatness, it is the heart of the human condition to imagine that we are greater than God and can rule and reign over our own lives. Like Belshazzar we may get away with this most of the time, but we shouldn’t be surprised if God sometimes interrupts our lives to remind us who’s really in charge.
