The Journey and the Destination

It’s a long way to go between drinks but on 12th February 2018 motoring adventurer Ben Coombs pulled up for a pint of beer at a bar in Tierra del Fuego, Chile.  It marked the end of a journey that had begun seven months and, 20,000 miles, 3 continents and 21 countries away, with another pint of beer on the Norwegian Island of Svarlbard.

Commenting on his final destination Ben said, “It’s a bit of a dive actually – plastic patio chairs and only lager and cheap whisky on the menu.  But that’s not the point.  It’s the journey that matters, not the destination.”

That’s all very well but what if Coombs knew that he would have to spend the rest of his life in the dive bar of Tierra del Fuego.  In that case he might have planned a different route.

For those of us who take the same approach to life – enjoy the journey and don’t worry about where you’ll end up – Jesus has this to say, “It’s the journey and the destination.”  That’s why he tells his friends “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” and to the thief who was crucified with him “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
