We’ll meet again

“We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when

But I know we’ll meet again some sunny day”

So sang Vera Lynn as Great Britain and her Allies entered the darkest days of history, and millions of young men were sent off to fight. Being separated from loved ones is always an agony, but when men go off to war and may not return, the parting is harder still. Throughout the war Vera Lynn’s rendition of the song kept alive the hope that loved ones would be reunited.

But it’s not just the hope of being reunited in this world that humans carry. For many there is a longing to be reunited with loved ones beyond the grave. It’s that hope that Jesus addressed with his disciples as he explained to them that he was going off to a fight that would cost him his life. He told them not to worry but to put their trust in God. He promised that he was going to prepare a place for them and that he would return. Had the words been penned he might have promised them “We’ll meet again”. It was a promise He kept then and still keeps now for all who trust in Him.
