Toy Story

In one of the closing scenes of the movie Toy Story, Woody and Buzz are desperately trying to catch up with the removal van taking Andy, to his new home.  In despair, they watch the van disappear into the distance as the batteries in their remote control car run out.  They think that all is lost, forgetting that strapped to Buzz’s back is a rocket that could be the answer to their problem.

I’m reminded of Mahatma Ghandi’s observation concerning Christians in India, of whom he said, “You Christians look after a document containing enough dynamite to blow all civilisation to pieces, turn the world upside down, and bring peace to a battle-torn planet.  But you treat it as though it is nothing more than a piece of literature.”

Like Buzz’s rocket the majority of homes in the UK possess at least one copy of the Bible, for the most part forgotten and gathering dust.  The same homes contain families facing trials and difficulties, many of which appear insurmountable.  If only we could realise that contained within the pages of the Bible is the power of God to touch and transform those very situations.

As we all know Andy lit Buzz’s rocket and the day was saved.  May we do the same with God’s Word!
