Investing in eternity

About a year after the financial crash of 2008 a friend sent me a cheque for ยฃ1,000.  They had very nearly lost the money in a bank that came close to collapse.

In the letter that my friend sent with the cheque they explained that having nearly lost the money they had realised they would rather put it to good use.  I was very grateful to be the recipient of this generosity!

Jesus once told a parable about a man who reaped a huge harvest.  He had nowhere to store his crops, so he tore down his barns and built bigger ones. Then he put his feet up and decided to โ€˜eat, drink and be merry.โ€™  That night, however, God said to him, โ€œYou fool!  This very night your life will be demanded from you.  Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?โ€

Thereโ€™s nothing like the prospect of suddenly losing everything to focus the mind and make us reflect on what we have done with the things entrusted to us.  Are we making investments that will only see a return in this life or are we investing for eternity?

As Jesus once wisely put it โ€˜Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.โ€™
