Forgiveness for all!

Both outgoing and incoming American Presidents have been generous with their displays of forgiveness. Four years ago, the clear up was in full swing after the storming of the Capitol on 6th January 2020. Some 1,600 people were convicted, some for violent assault. Now Trump has set them all free. Perhaps even more surprising, however, is Biden’s offer of pardons for family members and key officials including the members of the House Select Committee who investigated the Capitol riot. These pardons are remarkable for the fact that none of those pardoned have yet been accused of any wrongdoing!

No doubt many will cry foul at convicted felons being set free, and others being given immunity from wrongdoings yet to be uncovered. But that’s often the nature of forgiveness. It can seem so unfair when the guilty are either never held to account, or, when they are, set free. It’s why the grace at the heart of the Christian faith seems so offensive. On the cross Jesus took on himself all of my sin and wrongdoing. He paid the price and spoke forgiveness from the cross over those who put him there. His sacrifice sets me free. And if you wish, it can set you free too.
