In a move that will come as a huge relief to many the UK government has relented on its decision to ban the sale of take-away alcohol during lockdown. A relieved chairman of the Campaign for Real Ale said that he was ‘delighted’ at the change of heart that would avoid pubs having to pour away thousands of gallons of beer. No doubt it will prove a lifeline to many businesses that are fighting to stay afloat during this most unusual of years.
With restaurants closed demand for take-away meals soared during the first lockdown, with different parts of the country all having their favourites. While Aberdeen and Belfast went for burritos, Leeds and Ipswich preferred burgers and Oxford and Swansea a good old KFC!
All this has got me thinking about my personal favourite take-away and while I love fish and chips, Indian and Chinese, something rather different comes to mind. In a letter written during the first century by St John he says of Jesus, ‘he appeared that he might take away our sins’. So, while take away fish and chips may prove a welcome relief from cooking during the coming weeks, I know which take-away will really prove a lifeline!
