How does it end?

Simon AllabyAudio, Story

There’s nothing my daughter and I enjoy more than watching a good detective story on TV.  The only problem is she can’t wait until the end to discover who committed the crime.  So, while I’m happy to enjoy the show and wait for the big reveal, she’s busy Googling it to see how it’s all going to end.

Confronted with our own mortality the same two attitudes prevail.  While some of us are happy just to ‘wait and see’, others have a longing to know what will happen with their end.  The famous 20th century columnist Bernard Levin was definitely in the latter camp, writing on one occasion ‘Have I time to discover why I was born before I die?  There is an obvious danger in leaving it too late.’

For those of us who just can’t wait to find out, the good news is that in Christ we have a definitive answer.  Because he defeated death, the end of our lives need not be the end, because at his invitation a new resurrected life awaits.

For my daughter discovering the big reveal before the end of the show spoils its enjoyment.  But in life discovering Christ’s big reveal of eternal life only makes the show that much more enjoyable.
